In my opinion, and the opinion of many others I will say, some of you are doing it all wrong.
You are not seeing how to work in the Web 2.0 world.
Let's take Twitter (which is just another way to do social networking)
1. why would you ever "protect your updates"? What is the point? You don't want the world to see what you are posting?
2. You NEED to have a blog. Why? Because no one will knowingly follow you if you have a link to your business website if it is an AFFILIATE website or a direct sales company website. Think about it. If I told you to go to my AVON website, how fast would you look. Never?
3. You NEED to put your picture in your profile. Why? Because most other people do and if you do not it looks like you are trying to hide something. It does not have to be a picture of yourself. It could be a picture of anything, but a pic of yourself will be more effective.
C'mon. Don't waste your time using Old Web techniques in the Web 2.0 social networking arena. That is not to say that the old techniques, straight out advertising, is bad or does not work.
In fact, I am always wondering if I could better spend my time advertising on Ryze or Adwords or other good places than doing social networking. My gutt feeling is that social networking will pay off in the future.
Nothing good happens fast, dear friends. Don't make yourself look like an amateur even if you are. Everyone must start somewhere. There is always a price tag on success. If you think that is not true, well, good luck. Don't waste my time if you think that.
Take a look at the people you are checking out to follow on Twitter. See which ones make you want to learn more about them. Copy their techniques into your own methods.
You either get it or you don't.
The worst think you can do is to send me an ad for your business before I get to know you personally. Why? Because I WILL remember you then in a bad way. You ahve wasted your time, I assure you.
SPAM may work for Viagra or porn but it won't work for you.
